Colin Powell Legacy Wall
Environmental Infographic & Spatial Branding
Overview
Created following General Colin Powell’s passing in 2021, this large-scale environmental installation was designed to honor his life, leadership, and legacy while giving students, visitors, and the broader school community an accessible way to understand the breadth of his career.
The project transformed a prominent school corridor into an immersive visual timeline, tracing Powell’s journey from his early years and military service through his work as a statesman, diplomat, and public leader.
Design Approach
The challenge was to organize decades of history, milestones, archival photography, quotations, and contextual information into a narrative that could be understood both at a glance and through closer reading.
I developed a chronological visual system that balanced information density with clarity, using scale, typography, imagery, color, and spatial hierarchy to guide viewers through the story. Key content was positioned at comfortable viewing heights, while major images and moments created visual anchors across the full length of the wall.
The installation also incorporated Powell’s 13 Rules of Leadership, extending the story beyond biography to highlight the principles that shaped his approach to leadership.
This large-format production was designed for clear, orderly reading and accurate presentation of all information. Data was carefully positioned at eye level and styled with appropriate typography, colors, and sizes to ensure quick and easy comprehension.
Extending the Environment
The mural became part of a broader spatial branding initiative. Signage, dimensional lettering, color, and architectural graphics were designed to connect the surrounding offices and hallway to the installation, creating a more cohesive Colin Powell School environment.
